Fall Faves

So last week we had an actual blizzard! I’ve lived North of 60 for the majority of my life and never before have I experienced a bonafide blizzard. It was cray. Anyway, things have calmed down weather-wise and we’re back to crisp and sunny fall days. Fall is my favourite season for fashion. I love me some chunky knits, layers, and boots.

Here are a few of the things I’ve been reaching for over and over this fall.

This gorgeous oversize sweater from Urban Outfitters.

It’s like wrapping myself in an afgan. Delicious.

These Mavi jeans.

It’s all about the details with these babies. The zippers at the ankle, the panels at the knee, the leather pulls on the pocket zipper, and the inky indigo colour add up to the perfect pair of jeans. We all know that perfect jeans are nearly impossible to find!

This Bite Agave Lip Mask in champagne.

Colder weather means dry skin and chapped lips. This lip treatment is super thick and hydrating. You can wear it overnight but it adds a bit of sheen for daytime as well. It’s also a food grade product. You could eat this stuff. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing.

This Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat.

Just. Look. At. That. Luxe rosegold packaging and a built in highlighter for a stunning marbled blush. I mean come on. I die. It gives the cheeks a gorgeous rosy glow. Love.

What are you loving this fall?

Ipsy

Oh hey guys. S’up? Ha ha. Yup. We’re casual like that.

Ok. Enough fooling around, you guys aren’t here to listen to me wax ridiculous. You’re here to find out about make up (if not I’m sorry you’re lost)!

A while ago I did something that I’ve been thinking about doing for about two years. I signed up for Ipsy. What’s Ipsy? It’s a beauty subscription! For the low price of $16 dollars a month they send me a beautybag with four samples and one full sized product. I know it’s ridiculous but I don’t care. It’s fun.

image

Even the packaging is fun.

image

I recieved a full size Cailyn lipgloss, a Mitchell and Peach hand lotion, a Pacifica Eyeliner, a double ended Crown eyeshadow brush, and a Nourish Organics facial cleanser.

I wore the gloss last night. I love the vampy shade and it’s unscented. The lasting power was alright but the colour bled into the lines around my lips quite badly. I gave the lotion to my mom because it has a strong floral scent which is really not my jam. Other than that I’ll have to report back at a later date.

Kiss kiss.

What do you think of beauty subscriptions?

Currently Obsessed

Why hello there kittens! I’ve been without internet access for the last month and a bit so it’s been a while n’est-ce pas?

There have been some changes in the Poutine world, all of which are good. I’m the proud auntie of a gorgeous baby boy, I’m settled into a fab new apartment (would you be interested in a bit of a tour?), and I start a new job tomorrow!

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a sneaky peek of some products I’ve been crushing on lately.

image

image

The Body Shop Early Harvest Raspberry Body Scrub. I love the idea of body scrubs but most of the ones I’ve tried leave an oily film on my skin. Not so here folks. This stuff is divine and rinses off completely so that you are left with smooth skin and nothing else! It smells like raspberry jam,  looks like raspberry jam, but it most definitely does not taste like raspberry jam.

image

I obsessed over this lip balm for months before actually purchasing it. This is a total indulgence. It is tres expensive. I regret nothing. The Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm works with your body chemistry to turn your pout the perfect shade of pink for your skin tone. It has a faint minty scent and is super thick and hydrating. One swipe lasts several hours. I’ve been going for minimal make-up this summer and this is the perfect finish for a glowy daytime look.

image

I love bold, fluttery lashes. I think the right mascara can really make your eyes pop. Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes fits the bill. Last night I went to town and applied about six coats. I could see my lashes from 3 feet away. Delicious. I chose the non-waterproof formula and I do find that it smudges a bit at the end of the day. All in all though I’ve been enjoying this mascara.

What are you crushing on this summer?

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil

I didn’t take a cleanser with me to Hawaii. It’s hard to believe that an over – packer like myself would forget something like that, but I did. C’est la vie. Obviously, I had to pop into Sephora while I was there to grab one (ha ha). I chose the Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil.

image

Now, I know it seems counter – intuitive to cleanse oily skin with oil, but it’s not like you’d think. You massage a quarter sized dollop of the oil onto dry skin, really making sure to work it in well. It breaks down your makeup quickly. Then you wet your hands and continue massaging. The oil emulsifies and the texture becomes milky. Then you remove the oil with a warm face cloth and you’re done!

This stuff is the bomb dot com you guys. I love it. The scent is divine, really fresh and fruity. It’s just really nice to use. I look forward to washing my face at night. It leaves the skin feeling clean but not stripped. It’s just refreshing.

Have you tried a cleansing oil?

New Series!

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first post in a new series!

Empties

I have a shoebox full of empty products that I’ve finished up over the last few months.

What I’m going to do is give you the answers to 5 questions about each product:

1. What does the product claim to do?

2. Is the product effective?

3. Is the product good value for its price?

4. Did I enjoy using the product?

5. Would I repurchase the product?

Excited?

Product #1: AG fast food leave on condition

image

1. AG says that fast food will “nourish, detangle and help prevent split ends while adding weightless condition to dry, lifeless hair.”

2. I do think this leave in conditioner is effective. It really helped to give my curls definition without weighing my hair down. It also left my hair feeling really soft.

3. I can’t remember what I paid for this but it wasn’t super expensive. It is definitely good value though, because it does exactly what it’s supposed to and lasted at least a year. A dime sized amount was enough for all of my hair.

4. I definitely enjoyed this stuff. The scent is divine; it smells like candy. The formula is light and non-greasy.

5. I would repurchase fast food. I’m not going to right now because I’m using a L’Oreal spray on leave in conditioner at the moment, but when that’s used up I will keep an eye out for the AG one.

So there you have it! I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this post. Did I give enough information? Are there more questions you’d like answered? Share!!

Origins Zero Oil

I rarely talk about products that I don’t like here; mostly because it’s more fun to review things I do like. That said, when something is particularly bad I feel it’s important to tell you about it. Kind of like a public service, n’est-ce pas?

I was at Shopper’s a month or so ago picking up a few indulgences neccessities, and at the last minute tossed a bottle of Origins Zero Oil into my basket. I can’t resist a product that promises oil control.

image

The bottle says “Instant matte finish for shiny places.” I have shiny places friends. You can apply this under or on top of make-up. I’ve been using it faithfully for a month now. It doesn’t work; not even a little bit. I still have to blot as much as ever. I haven’t noticed even the slightest change in my skin. The product feels strange when applied, almost gritty. It’s super runny and i feel like more ends up on the bathroom floor than my face. I also dislike the packaging. It’s cheap and the cap is a pain to take on and off.

Overall I am really unimpressed with this product.

Have you had better luck?

Viva la Juicy

I haven’t really discussed perfume a lot here. I’m not sure why as I do enjoy scents. Lately I’ve become obsessed with Viva la Juicy.

image

I’ve been dousing myself with it on the regular. Every time I pop into Sephora, or anywhere perfume is sold, I just have to try it out. It’s a bit young I suppose, but I never act my age so it’s fine. I finally caved and picked up a roller ball at Macy’s yesterday. I regret nothing. It’s great for popping in your purse, but I think it’s also pretty enough to leave out on your counter.

The scent is warm and sweet. It has top notes of berries, mandarin, honey suckle, jasmin, and gardenia. It’s underlaid with caramel, amber, sandalwood, vanilla, and praline (www.juicycouture.com). YUM. The lasting power of this perfume is ok, 3 to 4 hours I’d say. I think this is a scent that works well for winter and summer.

What are some of your favourite perfumes?

Lush Vanilla Puff Dusting Powder

Aloha! Guess where I am lovelies! Hawaii! It’s so nice here; I fit right in.

Anyway, yesterday, true to form, I used my bloodhound-like shopping instincts to find a mall here in Honolulu. I walked for about an hour and a half to find it. I may be a shopaholic. I had to pick up a few indulgences neccessities. On a whim I grabbed a bottle of the Vanilla Puff Dusting Powder from Lush (I needed change for the trolley). I’ve been semi-curious about this product for a while.

image

It’s interesting. You sprinkle it on clean, dry skin and smooth it. It’s a little messy but not terrible. It does leave the skin feeling soft and pleasantly dry, if that makes sense. You can also sprinkle it on your sheets to keep them fresh. The scent is really unusual. It’s vanilla with jasmine. I’m not really a floral girl but I like this. It’s kind of spicy. There is also a vanilla pod in each little tub! It does leave the skin lightly scented for a few hours, but it’s not too strong.

Overall I enjoy this product and, while it’s certainly not a necessity, it’s a nice treat.

Are you a Lush girl?

Duck Face all Over the Place

Apocalips. I love me a clever name. Apocalips. Say it with me. That’s fun. Don’t ever let anyone tell you I don’t know how have a good time!

Rimmel Apocalips started popping up on the blogosphere sometime last year and it seemed like forever before they were finally available in Canada. I was so excited about them.

When they finally arrived I waited like two months before finally buying one. Sometimes I’m weird like that. Anyway, when I did finally get around to it I swatched all the colours and spent ages picking one. I decided on Nova. It’s a kind of a classic, Barbie dark pink. Really not my thing. It sat unused on my vanity for about a month until I forced myself to wear it yesterday.

image

The shade is definitely outside of my comfort zone, however I do like the product itself. It’s a liquid lipstick that you paint on. The colour payoff is good; you only need one coat. The lasting power is also good. The finish is nice. It’s satiny and quite glossy. My one complaint is that the product settled into all the lines on my lips and kind of emphasized them. I’m hoping that wouldn’t be as bad with some of the other shades. Actually, I do have another complaint. The scent is gross. It’s plasticky and unpleasant.

image

All in all I’d say it’s worth giving the Rimmel Apocalips a shot.

Have you tried liquid lipstick?

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush

If I had to choose a favourite make up product, it would definitely come down to either lipstick or blush. I love me a bold lip, and a healthy flush.

image

For the last six months or so I’ve been addicted to my Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour blushes. I don’t carry blush with me so I find it annoying when it starts to fade halfway through the day. Not a problem with these Tarte blushes. They last for ages, and at the end of the day they look the same as they did when I applied them that morning. Impressive!

Random side note: I just got hit with the worst craving for one of those Tim Horton’s muffins with the fruit filling. Does that ever happen to you guys?

Now, these blushes cost a pretty penny. They’re about $35 a pop, but of course I didn’t pay that for any of mine (I love me some eBay). It’s worth it though. Tarte is a cruelty free brand, and the quality speaks for itself.

image

I have three shades: Natural Beauty, Fearless, and Magic. Natural Beauty is red toned and when I first got it I was afraid of it. I’d never worn a red blush before. That said, it has quickly become my favourite of the three and it’s the one I wear the most. It’s heavily pigmented so you only need to touch your brush to the powder and you’ve got enough colour for both cheeks. It’s totally matte and it works beautifully with a bold red or fucsia lip. Fearless is a pretty coral pink with gold shimmer. It’s a great daytime shade and gives you that flush that you get from being outside in the cold. Magic is a completely matte peachy pink. I think this one has been discontinued so I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about it.

Swatches right to left: Natural Beauty, Fearless, Magic.

I haven’t tried anything else from Tarte but the blushes are phenomenal. This is definitely a brand I want to explore further.
